Sokoban Wiki

Sokoban (倉庫番, Warehouse Keeper) is a puzzle game developed by Thinking Rabbit and released in 1982 in Japan. The game was created by Hiroyuki Imabayashi and is the first title in the Sokoban series.

The game was first published in 1982, released in cassette tape format for the NEC PC-8801, PC-8001 mk2 and the Fujitsu FM-7 home computers. In the next year it was released for the Sharp X1, MZ-2000 and the NEC PC-6001 home computers.

Overview[]

Being the very first game in the series Sokoban is a rather simple game, laying the foundation for all subsequent titles. Each puzzle is designed as a 32x20 square grid, with wall tiles delimiting the room and the area of movement. The player character can move in the four cardinal directions within this delimited space, moving one square tile at a time, with the main objective of each puzzle being to move all boxes into the marked tiles.

The original game includes 20 levels; the first ten levels are regular Sokoban puzzles, while levels 11 to 20 are puzzles which include false walls. These false walls appear just like regular walls, with no indication that they are different, but if the player moves toward them from a specific direction they are demolished, thus forming a path through which the player can move through. This mechanic would be ditched after this game.
